Manchester United target Raphael Varane told to sign or leave by Real Madrid
According to The Daily Mail (h/t The Express), Real Madrid have told Manchester United target Raphael Varane to pen a new contract or risk being sold this summer.
The 27-year-old is one of the finest defenders in the world and has been instrumental in both Real and France’s success in recent years.
With his current deal at the Santiago Bernabeu expiring in 2022, Los Blancos have been forced to make a decision. The Spaniards are keen to retain the player’s services but will not hesitate to sell him if contract negotiations reach an impasse.
Real Madrid has not been immune to the financial after-effects of the coronavirus pandemic. They cannot afford to risk losing Varane for free when his contract expires and could be forced to do business.
This could work out well for United, who are keen on a new centre-back. In Varane, we will be getting just that – a player in the prime of his career and proven at the top level.
A domino effect?
Real value the defender at around £60million. United are meanwhile keeping a close eye on the situation. Varane’s partner and Spanish legend Sergio Ramos is also caught in a similar situation.
The veteran is also involved in a contract standoff with Real amidst links to Manchester United. Of the two, Varane would be the better choice given his viability as a long-term option.
In what could be a transfer merry go round, David Alaba who was heavily linked to Real Madrid would have been an ideal replacement for Ramos. However, the Spaniards are unwilling to match the Austrian’s wage demands.
Whether United, who have been linked with the player, will attempt to make a move remains to be seen.
