Bidding war looming? Top clubs circle impressive Zirkzee
Manchester United have expressed interest in Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee, as the Red Devils look to hand summer signing Rasmus Højlund space and competition to aid his development.
Joshua Zirkzee has been playing some impressive all-round football under Thiago Motta’s tutelage this season. He has shown his elite technical understanding of the game while operating in multiple spaces and phases of play in the Italian top tier.
His antics can assure Champions League football at Centro Tecnico Niccolò Galli for the first time since 1965, back when it was known as the European Cup. Zirkzee has netted 12 goals while laying seven assists in 36 appearances across all competitions this season.
Manchester United would love to have Zirkzee at their disposal at Old Trafford. He is someone who can not only play as a lone striker but could also complement Rasmus Højlund upfront. However, there is a striker need around Europe, with many elite clubs looking for a centre-forward, and Zirkzee’s signature could spark a bidding war, driving his price up and potentially forcing United to re-evaluate their transfer strategy.
Alongside the Manchester Reds, League rivals Arsenal have also expressed interest in Zirkzee. Juventus, AC Milan, and Inter Milan are rumoured to be possible destinations within Italy.
Will Zirkzee’s Champions League dreams hinder Manchester United’s pursuit?
Despite interests from around Europe, Bayern Munich hold a trump card as the German giants have a buy-back clause worth €40 million in the transfer that brought him to Bologna in 2022. This could prove a major hurdle for the clubs looking to obtain his signature this summer.
Zirkzee would love to compete at the highest level in the Champions League, and with no UCL football at Old Trafford next season, the officials at United will have some convincing to do if they were to land his signature.
