AS Roma eye free transfer for Manchester United shot-stopper Davide de Gea
Manchester United shot-stopper David de Gea is attracting interest from AS Roma, who are ‘exploring the possibility’ of getting him on a free transfer, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The 32-year-old’s current contract with the Red Devils is set to expire at the end of the season. To that end, the Serie A giants are eyeing the goalkeeper if he does not extend his stay at the Old Trafford side.
Recently, the Spaniard turned down the Manchester-based club’s opening offer. However, both parties are optimistic about reaching an agreement over new terms.
However, the Giallorossi are still monitoring De Gea’s situation at United. They hope to acquire the Spaniard’s services if he becomes a free agent.
The 32-year-old signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2011 from Atletico Madrid. Since then, the shot-stopper has mainly been the Old Trafford side’s number one.
While De Gea has seen a lot of ups during his spell in Manchester, he has also had some considerable downs. At one point, it looked like the Spaniard was set to lose his place in between the sticks with the emergence of Dean Henderson.
However, the 32-year-old has managed to get back to his best. In the previous campaign, the shot-stopper won United’s Players’ Player of the Year award.
At the moment, Erik ten Hag has Tom Heaton and Jack Butland as his backup goalkeepers. While the two are important members of the squad, they seemingly do not possess the quality to start week in, week out for a club like the Old Trafford side.

For now, De Gea is the only quality option in our ranks. The Spaniard has made a case to be handed a new deal with some clutch performances this season. Hopefully, Roma will not be able to pounce on the 32-year-old’s signature next summer.
