Manchester United legend David De Gea declined the opportunity provided by Nottingham Forest to return to the Premier League

Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea refused to join Nottingham Forest and return to the Premier League in January. The 33-year-old is a free agent since his contract with the Red Devils expired last summer.

United manager Erik ten Hag pre-planned the deployment of Andre Onana as the number-one goalkeeper from this season onwards. De Gea rejected the new deal offered by United with a lower offer and lost out on a starting role.

The Spaniard has rejected offers from cash-rich Saudi Pro League clubs and many other suiters. His motivation stems from the ambition to play as a first-choice for a top club rather than the money.

De Gea enjoyed 12 seasons at Old Trafford since signing under the Legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson. He replaced another legend Edwin van der Saar and successfully filled his shoes, writing his legacy at United.

The 33-year-old won the Premier League, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup and the Europa League during his time. He captained the Red Devils with pride and broke Peter Schmeichel’s record of most clean sheets in the club’s history.

The Athletic reported that Nottingham approached De Gea to sign him in a short-term deal with the club. The report states that Forest tempted the Spaniard with the idea of reminding the football world of his talent. He would have used the time at the club to attract suitors for a more high-profile transfer in the summer.

Nevertheless, De Gea rejected the offer with many contemplating that the legendary goalkeeper is on the verge of premature retirement. Goalkeepers have a longer peak year compared to on-field players with many lasting past 40 years of age.
