Newcastle United are ready to swoop in for Manchester United legend David De Gea to replace the injured Nick Pope

Newcastle United are ready to sign Manchester United legend David De Gea to fill in for the injured Nick Pope. The former United goalkeeper is currently a free agent since leaving the Red Devils during the summer transfer window.

United manager Erik ten Hag signed Andre Onana during the summer transfer window to replace De Gea. The Cameroon international has struggled to live up to the expectations so far, making numerous critical errors since his debut.

Onana made four errors in the Champions League as United are facing elimination from the competition before the knockout stages. The Red Devils have conceded 34 goals from 21 matches in all competitions this season. The poor defensive display has played a big role in their struggling season with 10 losses already.

United conceded only 43 goals last season in the Premier League, ranking fourth in the least goals conceded. The brilliant defensive display helped De Gea earn the Golden Gloves last season as he kept the most clean sheets.

Daily Mail reported that Newcastle are ready to sign the 33-year-old to fill in for their injured goalkeeper Nick Pope. The Spaniard had interest from many clubs which included the cash-rich Saudi Pro League clubs but De Gea rejected them. The former United keeper’s primary incentive is competition at the highest level rather than a big payday.

Many United fans wanted the Red Devils to resign the 33-year-old but reliable journalist Ben Jacobs squashed those hopes.

Jacobs claimed that De Gea is not looking for a return to United despite his love for the club. The Spanish goalkeeper’s summer exit left a bitter taste in many people including De Gea himself.

United can be without Onana when his country participates in the African Cup of Nations early next year. It remains uncertain whether United will put their faith in their secondary goalkeeping choices or choose to explore the transfer market for a replacement.
