Manchester United legend Paul Scholes berated “lazy players” after their Premier League loss against Newcastle United
Manchester United legend Paul Scholes chastised the “lazy players” in the senior team after their 1-0 loss against Newcastle United. United lost the Premier League game at St. James’ Park on Saturday as the home team dominated throughout 90 minutes.
The Magpies controlled 59% of the possession throughout the game as United struggled to keep them out of their half. The Red Devils only mustered one shot on target from eight shots in total. Whereas, Newcastle attempted four shots on goal out of 22 shots in total, bombarding the visitors with their attack.
United manager Erik ten Hag opted to play Luke Shaw in a make-shift centre-back role instead of using Raphael Varane. The Red Devils somehow managed to go level in the halftime break despite continuous pressure from the Newcastle players.
Nevertheless, Anthony Gordon broke the deadlock in the 55th minute with a close-range finish to score the winner. United winger Antony scored an equaliser from the Harry Maguire deflection during the final moments of the game. Unfortunately, Maguire ventured offside during the play and VAR correctly denied the goal for the visitors.
Scholes told Premier League Production (h/t Manchester Evening News) that the team has too many lazy players right now. He said:
“Rubbish. They’re a poor football team at this minute, aren’t they? Those results they’ve had recently are misleading. Too many lazy players on the football team – you can’t get away with that. Going to these places, the first thing you do is work hard. You can see the joy that Newcastle are getting down both sides and feel sorry for the full backs.”
United won three games in a row before this Newcastle loss to build some moment in the Premier League. The Red Devils are currently seventh in the Premier League table with some clubs yet to play their respective games.
United have lost six out of 14 games in the Premier League as their struggle with inconsistency continues. Many senior players have faced severe criticism for their lack of contribution and efforts in the field.

The fans and media have berated players like Marcus Rashford, Antony, and Anthony Martial for their poor performances. Promising midfielder Kobbie Mainoo provided a more promising display compared to his experienced team-mates.
Additionally, players like Scot McTominay and Maguire earned their way back into Ten Hag’s good grace despite struggling to get game-time earlier in the season. United need more contribution from their first-team players as they head into the congested fixture period.
