David de Gea would like to sign a new contract and remain at Manchester United for ‘more years’

Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea has suggested that he would like to sign a new contract and remain at the club. The 31-year-old is in the final year of his existing deal.

The Red Devils can extend De Gea’s contract by an additional year if they want. And the Old Trafford side are expected to trigger the option in the shot-stopper’s deal before the end of the winter transfer window.

De Gea has been in fine form for United this season. While the 31-year-old did not have the best of starts under Erik ten Hag, the Spaniard has found his feet in recent weeks.

Against Everton on 9 October at Goodison Park, De Gea was once again pivotal as United won 2-1. The Spaniard made some good saves at the death to secure the three points for the Old Trafford side.

Speaking to BT Sport after the victory via Manchester Evening News, De Gea is hopeful of remaining at United. The 31-year-old claims he is delighted to be in Manchester.

“I’m just very focused on the games helping the team as much as I can.

“Of course, I would like to be here for more years, so let’s see what happens in the future. I’m really, really happy here.”

De Gea signed for United from Spanish outfit Atletico Madrid in 2011. Since then, the 31-year-old has developed by leaps and bounds to become one of the best shot-stoppers in world football.

However, De Gea had a blip in his United career after the 2018 World Cup in Russia. The goalkeeper seemed to have lost some of his confidence. And the Spaniard’s career in Manchester looked to be on its final legs.

Fortunately, De Gea has regained his form in the last couple of seasons. The 31-year-old was one of our best players in the 2021/22 campaign and has continued in a similar fashion under Ten Hag.

However, fans do have doubts about De Gea’s ability on the ball. And with the new gaffer seemingly insisting on playing the ball out from the back, it remains to be seen whether the club extend the Spaniard’s stay at United.
