Erik Ten Hag gives an update on Anthony Martial’s injury sustained against Everton
Manchester United faced a stern task ahead of the trip to Goodison Park to face Everton days after getting humbled in a 6-3 defeat to noisy neighbours Manchester City.
The team needed to show strength and solidarity to come back from a heavy defeat and they rightly did so which resulted in a deserving and hard-fought 2-1 victory against Everton, pushing us to fifth in the Premier League table and a point below fourth-placed Chelsea.
One of the only positives to come out of the defeat to City was the cameo appearance and return of Anthony Martial who scored twice before adding one more in the Europa League victory over Omonia FC.
Hence, it was a delight to see Martial back in the starting line-up, he would have definitely been the first-choice forward under Eric ten Hag had it not been for the injury sustained just before the season initiated.
On his first start after the injury, Martial provided another dimension to United’s play and assisted Antony brilliantly for the first goal. However, he felt some discomfort on the pitch and was substituted just near the thirty-minute mark, most probably as a precautionary measure by the manager.
Ten Hag was asked for an update regarding the Frenchman’s situation and the manager confirmed it was a new injury for the player with niggling issues in his back. He said after the game (h/t the Express):
“I don’t think so [it is the same injury]. It’s something different. He had a problem in his back, he was important, assist for the goal of Antony so we’re happy with that.”
It does seem like a never-ending loop for the striker who has not been able to cement a place at the club where he has spent the last seven years. Recurring injuries and changes of managers are some of the many factors which have resulted in such a situation.
No one with good footballing knowledge would doubt the ability that Martial possesses and is a very good player on his day. However, those days have just not been enough with his debut goal against Liverpool still one of the most memorable moments attached to the player.
There were speculations that Martial would be on his way out of Old Trafford, after a failed loan spell with Sevilla but with an impressive pre-season under new boss Ten Hag and his cameo performances in the season so far, he looks set to be part of the team for the near future.

Hopefully, further test reports would only provide us with a better idea about the nature of the injury suffered and how long he will be out. For us fans who are aware of his importance to the way the manager wants to play, we have to be hopeful that it is not a serious injury and Martial returns to the team soon.
