Manchester United player ratings in 4-3 loss Chelsea

Manchester United took on Chelsea in a bid to get back in the race for UCL contention. Chelsea struck within the first few minutes of the game and doubled up thanks to a penalty conceded by Antony.

However, Manchester United performed that no one would’ve thought they had in them. The team came back down from 2-0 to take the lead at 3-2 just to lose it again during the closing minutes of the game.

Erik ten Hag has made it his job to confuse the fans. Consistently he backs up poor performances from previous weeks with ones like tonight. United may have lost but they deserved the win tonight. Let’s have a look at how the players fared on an individual level in United’s loss tonight.

Here are WAFU’s ratings of Manchester United players in the game against Chelsea

Andre Onana: 5

Was completely beaten by the Chelsea players tonight. Completely misread Palmer’s penalty and could’ve positioned himself better to stop Gallagher’s goal. Completely misread the second penalty as well. Finally, there wasn’t anything to stop the fourth.

Diogo Dalot: 5

Diogo Dalot struggled through most of the first half and consistently failed to contain Cole Palmer. Redeemed himself on offense by delivering a beautiful ball to Bruno Fernandes to make it 2-2.

Gave away a penalty during the closing minutes and cost his team two points, nerves got the better of him during the end.

Raphael Varane: 5

Looked out of sorts for the first half of the action he enjoyed. Got a knock during the closing minutes of the first forty-five and was benched for the second half.

Harry Maguire: 4

Harry Maguire tried to play the old man’s game since his pace couldn’t keep up with the young players’ pace anymore. However, he failed to do much of anything, except for a few clearances.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 8

Was easily Manchester United’s best defender tonight. Made crucial interceptions in the first half and was consistently tracking back to keep Mudryk on hold. Terrific performance by Wan-Bissaka.

Kobbie Mainoo: 7

Kobbie Mainoo seemed like the only player who didn’t give up when the team was down 2-0. Did what he does best with a ball at his feet and controlled the midfield. Mainoo was miles better than Casemiro tonight which says a lot about the Brazilian’s decline.

Casemiro: 5

Failed to mark Connor Gallagher during the opening minutes of the game which led to a goal for Chelsea. The Brazilian defender is one of the most experienced players on the team and should’ve done better. Was subbed off in the 75th minute

Bruno Fernandes: 8

Led from the front today, and made a terrific run into the box to put his team level at 2-2. His finishing was on point and the skipper gave a long-overdue performance. Unlucky to have lost the way he did.

Alejandro Garnacho: 8*

Kicked off the comeback by making a terrific interception during the first half. Seemed low on energy during the second half but found himself on the end of an amazing ball from Antony and scored his second.

Antony: 8

Antony got to start for Erik ten Hag’s side and showed his quality. He was a constant threat and repeatedly beat Cucurella. He was involved in two goals for the Red Devils tonight. It was his pass to switch the play that led to a goal for Bruno Fernandes via Dalot. He delivered another exceptional ball during the second half to help make it 3-2 for United.

Rasmus Hojlund failed to get it going tonight. (Photo by GLYN KIRK/AFP via Getty Images)

Rasmus Hojlund: 6

Rasmus Hojlund struggled to impact the game tonight. He broke free once during the second half in a moment similar to the one that led to Garnacho’s first. However, the Dane failed to knock one home. Subbed off after 66 minutes.

Substitutes:

Jonny Evans: 7

A solid performance from the Manchester United veteran. Was as dependable as always and did well to defend the box for his team.

Marcus Rashford: 3

Came on in the 66th minute and did nothing at all to affect the game. Marcus Rashford coming off the bench isn’t a good sign for the out-of-form star.

Willy Kambwala: 5

Got to be a part of the team after a long break. Looked comfortable on the pitch and should be getting more minutes.

Mason Mount: N/A

Did not warrant a rating. The former Chelsea man didn’t get enough time to impact the game. However, Stamford Bridge booed him regardless of that.

Scott McTominay: N/A

Did not warrant a rating.
