“Leave the football before the football leaves you”- Manchester United star urged to quit Old Trafford after Crystal Palace horror show

Jamie Carragher has called on Casemiro to call it quits at Manchester United

Jamie Carragher knows a thing or two about having a horror show in defence and he had some wise words of wisdom for Casemiro after the Manchester United star struggled away to Crystal Palace.

Serving as a makeshift centre-back, the Brazilian veteran struggled to get going. Michael Olise left him on the ground early on to open the scoring for the home side in what was a sign of things to come.

Sporting the captain’s armband in Bruno Fernandes’s absence, Casemiro’s performance let much to be desired. While one can sympathise with him being played out of position, the lack of fighting spirit or leadership was apparent.

Speaking on Sky Sports (via X) after the game, Jamie Carragher believes the time is now ripe for Casemiro to take the next step in his career. The 32-year-old is clearly regressing and has seen better days. He has now been urged to seek his fortunes in the Middle East or move to the MLS.

“He needs to call it a day at this level of football and move.”

It has been apparent for quite some time now that Casemiro has lost his edge. A monster of a player while at Real Madrid, he has only been a moderate success at Old Trafford. Past his peak, the Brazilian has bene unable to cope with the pace and power of the English game more often than not.

A retired player himself, Carragher knows what it means to see someone regress as a top level footballer. Casemiro is a textbook case of it and the former Liverpool man believes the Brazilian’s time at Old Trafford should not extend beyond the 2023-24 campaign.

“Leave the football before the football leaves you”

Casemiro was part of the Real Madrid lineup that won numerous UEFA Champions League titles in the last decade. However, while Toni Kroos and Luka Modric continue to make a difference, the Brazilian’s move to England has seen him struggle. Casemiro is a legend of the game and will be appreciated for his exploits but unfortunately he is today more of a liability than an asset.

Carragher is not the only ex-pro who noticed Casemiro’s struggles. Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand too took to social media to make his feelings known about the 32-year-old’s performance.

Signing the Brazilian was always supposed to be a short term fix. While the defensive midfield needs to be added to this summer, moving Casemiro on is the right decision. It is difficult to see what he can add to his game at this age and United are better off moving him on and cutting their losses.
