Manchester United have Harry Maguire plan to reduce transfer target’s £70m valuation and upgrade in defense

Harry Maguire could help Manchester United land a key defensive upgrade this summer

As reported by The Daily Mail, Manchester United could use Harry Maguire to help them get Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite at a cheaper price. The 21-year-old is valued at around £70m and the Toffees are ready to cash in on him.

Even though they wouldn’t prefer to move the young star, a sale might be necessary to help them avoid further point deductions by PSR. The Red Devils rate Branthwaite very highly but a £70m price tag might look a bit rich to them.

However, Harry Maguire could be the man that makes it a win-win situation for both teams. By doing a swap plus compensation deal Everton will be able to add depth to their defence. However Man United will also have to compete for Branthwaite.

There are a lot of top-flight clubs looking at the youngster so he’ll have plenty of options this summer. Moreover, United shouldn’t be breaking the bank on the 21-year-old. There are a lot of gaps to fill this summer and spending a ton on Branthwaite alone could hamper plans.

Raphael Varane, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof are also expected to depart during the summer, so Man United might be in the market for a ton of defenders. They can lay the foundation for the future by making quality signings during this period.

On the topic of Harry Maguire, it is still unsure whether Everton would be too open to the idea of adding him to the team. The English defender is already on the wrong side of 30 and is only getting older. Moreover, his pace has declined noticeably over the course of this season. The Toffees might not be too keen on a swap due to these issues.
