Yann Sommer has reservations about joining Manchester United as a backup goalkeeper this summer
According to Sky Germany (h/t Metro), Borussia Monchengladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer is grateful for the interest Manchester United have shown in him. However, the 33-year-old has some reservations about joining the Red Devils.
The Switzerland international has a year left on his current contract with the Bundesliga outfit. Gladbach have offered the shot-stopper an extension. Nevertheless, Sommer is open to leaving Die Fohlen this summer.
While a move to United is tempting for Sommer, first-team action isn’t guaranteed at Old Trafford. David de Gea has been the undisputed starter for some time now.
With the World Cup before the end of the year, the Switzerland international is looking to play regularly. Murat Yakin has a few options to choose from to play in between the sticks. And Sommer wants to be in the manager’s XI in Qatar.
United’s goalkeeping situation
United have started off the season on a bad note. Erik ten Hag has suffered losses against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford. The team has lacked ideas in the attacking half and have been shaky in defence.
The Dutch manager has De Gea and Tom Heaton to rely on at the moment. Dean Henderson left the club this summer and joined newly promoted Nottingham Forest on loan.
Considering that the team is being asked to play out from the back, fans would have preferred the England international to stay. Our Spanish shot-stopper has had a hard time in Ten Hag’s system.
De Gea didn’t look comfortable with the ball at his feet against Brighton. The Brentford game was worse as the 31-year-old made errors to gift the first two goals to the Bees.

Sommer is an experienced international. While we do have Heaton, United need more quality to rely on in between the sticks if De Gea continues to falter under Ten Hag.
