Leeds United unwilling to negotiate with Manchester United for Illan Meslier
According to transfer guru Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Leeds United are unwilling to hold talks with Manchester United for the transfer of goalkeeper Illan Meslier.
The Elland Road outfit have no intention of parting ways with the French national. The 22-year-old is considered an essential part of Jesse Marsch’s team. Our Premier League rivals consider the former FC Lorient shot-stopper ‘untouchable’.
Man United are after a goalkeeper this summer after Dean Henderson’s loan move to Nottingham Forest. The Red Devils currently have David de Gea and Tom Heaton in the squad.
Meslier has been one of the most promising prospects in England’s first tier since Leed’s promotion back in 2020. The 22-year-old was Marcelo Bielsa’s first choice. And the Whites were impressive in the 2020/21 season, their first PL campaign in 16 years.
United’s goalkeeper under Erik ten Hag
Man United, under Erik ten Hag are seemingly trying to get the goalkeeper more involved in the build-up play. Throughout the pre-season, there have been signs with De Gea and Heaton looking for shorter passing options.
However, the start of the 2022/23 campaign has been terrible for the Dutch manager. The Red Devils have lost the first two fixtures in the PL. The whole team has let down supporters with the performances they’ve put in against Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford.
It has been evident with the performances De Gea has put in that he isn’t the sort of goalkeeper with the qualities Ten Hag is looking for. The Spaniard’s distribution leaves a lot to be desired.
Meslier has been key to the way Leeds have played over the years. Under Bielsa and Marsch in West Yorkshire, the 22-year-old has been given the responsibility of playing out from the back. And the France U21 international is confident with the ball at his feet.
