Sir Jim Ratcliff interested in taking control from the Glazers at Manchester United
Ineos chairman and CEO Sir Jim Ratcliff is interested in buying Manchester United from the Glazers. The billionaire, who’s a fan of the Red Devils, is a “potential buyer” if the current owners put it up for sale.
The Glazer family took full control of United in 2005. Since then, the American owners have been criticised by fans for their mishandling of the club.
A spokesperson for Ratcliff told The Times (Subscription Required) that the billionaire would be open to buying United if the opportunity arose. In addition, with the Glazers seemingly considering selling a minority stake in the club, the Ineos CEO would be willing to start with that as well.
“If the club is for sale, Jim is definitely a potential buyer.
“If something like this was possible, we would be interested in talking with a view to long-term ownership.”
Ratcliff wants full ownership of the club. However, he could do what the Glazers did initially and become a minority stakeholder. After that, the billionaire would look for ways to gain complete control.
Under the current ownership, United fans have seen major mismanagement. Since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, the Red Devils haven’t really competed for significant honours such as the Premier League and Champions League.
Ratcliff is a United fan and wants to help the club out. The spokesperson also suggested that the investment could be used to fix Old Trafford. Supporters feel the iconic stadium hasn’t been looked after.
“This is not about the money that has been spent or not spent. Jim is looking at what can be done now and, knowing how important the club is to the city, it feels like the time is right for a reset.”
United have changed multiple managers since Fergie. The club have also spent a considerable amount of money on bringing in new players. However, the team has regressed over the years.
The Glazers had appointed Ed Woodward to oversee the business and sporting side of things. But he failed to run the club properly. We’ve appointed Richard Arnold now. However, fans feel it’s too little too late.
