Fabrizio Romano confirms that Manchester United fullback Tyrell Malacia suffered an unfortunate setback during his rehabilitation

Italian Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported that Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia suffered a setback during his rehabilitation. A knee injury has kept the 24-year-old sidelined since the conclusion of last season.

Malacia had undergone surgery after the end of the last season and has missed the current season so far. United manager Erik ten Hag has faced an injury crisis this season, particularly at the left-back department.

United lost Luke Shaw earlier in the season and signed Sergio Reguilon as a backup during the deadline day. However, the Spaniard struggled with injury as the Red Devils deployed Sofyan Amrabat and Victor Lindelof as make-shift left-backs.

United manager Erik ten Hag struggled with balance and team cohesion due to the injury crisis and poor individual performances. The Red Devils lost nine out of the 20 matches in all competitions while conceding 33 goals so far.

Shaw returned from injury after the November international break and took his primary role as a starter immediately. However, United need more depth in the department as they head into the congested fixture period from December to January.

Romano used his X account to report that Malacia suffered a setback during his rehabilitation, requiring further surgery. The report further suggests that the 24-year-old is on course to return to action early next year.

United signed Malacia from Dutch club Feyenoord in the summer of 2022 after Ten Hag took over the club. The Dutch international has appeared in 39 games for the Red Devils in all competitions but failed to contribute offensively.

Nevertheless, Malacia played as a second-choice competition and an important replacement for Shaw last season. The Dutchman featured in the Europa League and domestic cup regularly under Ten Hag, playing plenty of Premier League games.

The return of Malacia would be a welcome addition to United, contributing to the much-needed balance in the squad. The Red Devils need the full strength of their squad to challenge for the top-four position in the Premier League.
