Transfer News: Manchester United interested in Borussia Dortmund star Thomas Meunier

According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Manchester United are interested in Borussia Dortmund right-back Thomas Meunier. The 30-year-old could be bought in to compete with Diogo Dalot.

United are hoping to sell or loan Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer, with former club Crystal Palace interested in him. It is believed that Palace are willing to offer £10 million for the services of the 24-year-old.

Meunier joined Dortmund in 2020 for a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain. A highly experienced right-back, he can also play as a right-midfielder whenever required. Erik ten Hag wants a right-back to compete with Dalot and looks like they have found one.

The 30-year-old has established himself in the Dortmund team since his arrival. He missed most of the second half of last season due to injury, but now has completely recovered. The Belgian international made 17 Bundesliga appearances last season, assisting four in the process.

Wan-Bissaka is not part of Ten Hag’s plan as Dalot has started both the games this season. He is likely to depart from the team before the window ends. But Meunier is not the only right-back of interest to the Manchester club.

United are also interested in Barcelona right-back Sergino Dest, who has been told he can leave the club this summer. The La Liga club in return are interested in Meunier, potentially as the back-up if Dest leaves.

It is understood that a fee of around €15 million has been proposed for Meunier. A highly experienced defender, the 30-year-old could be a very good signing for the club. United also considered moving for the Belgian before they bought Wan-Bissaka in 2019. Maybe second-time would be a lucky charm for the club.

United will hope to conduct its business quickly in the transfer market. Only two weeks are remaining and United seems to have links with a lot of players. It will be wise for Ten Hag to have a team ready before their bad start gets any worse.

Meunier brings with him experience of playing in the French and German top divisions. He could be the experienced, level-headed presence Ten Hag needs on the flanks to help him navigate through his first few seasons at Old Trafford.
