Manchester United are ‘still interested’ in Bayern Munich and former Borussia Monchengladbach shot-stopper Yann Sommer, according to SportBild’s Christian Falk on Twitter.

The Switzerland international joined the Bavarians in the previous transfer window from Die Fohlen as a replacement for Manuel Neuer, who is currently on the sidelines.

Over the last few months, the 34-year-old has been the number one in between the sticks at the Allianz Arena side. The veteran goalkeeper has put in some admirable displays for the Bundesliga giants.

However, Neuer has been the first choice at Bayern for over a decade. As a result, it is evidently expected that the 37-year-old will return to the starting lineup when he is back to full fitness.

To that end, Sommer has a ‘gentleman’s agreement‘ with the Bavarians regarding his role in the team. If the former Schalke shot-stopper makes a comeback into the starting lineup, the Swiss national will be allowed to leave the Allianz Arena side in the upcoming transfer window.

For now, David de Gea is the number one at Man United. The Spain international has been in fine form for the Red Devils since last season after regaining his place in the pecking order.

In the 2020/21 campaign, the 32-year-old had to share minutes with Dean Henderson in between the sticks. But after struggling for minutes in the previous term, the 26-year-old joined Nottingham Forest on loan in the summer of 2022.

Unfortunately, while De Gea has had several moments for the highlight reels this season, the Spaniard has also made a few blunders in recent weeks.

But the veteran goalkeeper is the best bet for Erik ten Hag as things stand. The Dutch manager has Tom Heaton and Jack Butland as backup shot-stoppers at his disposal.

Therefore, De Gea could do with some competition for a place in the team. Sommer is another experienced and talented goalkeeper. But it remains to be seen whether the Swiss national will opt to leave Bayern for the Old Trafford side next summer.
