Bayern Munich keeper Yann Sommer relaxed about his future amid links with Manchester United
Bayern Munich keeper Yann Sommer, who is one of the few goalkeepers linked with Manchester United, is relaxed about his future with the German champions.
Apart from Sommer, United are interested in signing Porto’s Diogo Costa and Inter Milan’s Andre Onana to bolster the goalkeeping department this summer.
The Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag wants a new number one as the trust in David de Gea is waning following an inconsistent season between the sticks.
Here’s what Sommer said when asked about his future amidst links away from Bayern (h/t SRF, via Manchester Evening News):
“I still have two years of contract with Bayern. And I’m very happy about it. For this reason, I’m very relaxed. Now, I’m with the national team and then I’ll have a few days off. I’ll think about the future (later on).”
De Gea’s contract at Old Trafford expires this month. There are talks about him extending his stay at the club. But, if his performances under ten Hag are anything to go by, he should be let go of this summer.
Throughout the 2022/23 season, ten Hag’s first as a United boss, De Gea showed vulnerability when asked to play out from the back. Mistakes made doing that probably lowed his confidence in stopping shots as well.
While it is not the end of the world to hear that Sommer is not interested in a move now, United should look to get either Onana or Costa over the line in the coming days. A good team needs to have a goalkeeper who is comfortable with what his manager wants.
Both keepers are excellent with their feet and have developed well as shot-stoppers. The former was very good for Inter in the Champions League final too.

It remains to be seen the direction the club takes regarding this issue. The transfer may depend on the price range at which their transfer targets are available. The other factor would be the suitability of the player with ten Hag.
