34-year-old Manchester United transfer target expresses desire to join Bayern Munich

Yann Sommer expresses ‘desire’ to join Bayern Munich from Borussia Monchengladbach amidst Manchester United interest

Borussia Monchengladbach star Yann Sommer has expressed his desire to join Bayern Munich amidst interest from Manchester United, according to German outlet Suddeutsche Zeitung (h/t Mirror). The Red Devils have been monitoring him since the summer of 2023.

The Switzerland international is in the final year of his current contract with Die Fohlen. As a result, the 34-year-old will be a free agent at the end of the current campaign.

The shot-stopper has also informed the hierarchy at the Bundesliga outfit about his intentions to leave Danie Farke’s team in January and join the Bavarians. It remains to be seen how the situation transpires.

Julian Nagelsmann’s team are in search of a short-term fix in between the sticks. Manuel Neuer suffered an injury while on a skiing holiday, breaking his leg. The German outfit now have Sven Ulreich and Johannes Schenk at their disposal.

At the moment, David de Gea is the number one in between the sticks at Man United. The 32-year-old has been in fine form for the Red Devils since last season.

While the Spaniard had a shaky start to the campaign under Erik ten Hag, he has bounced back admirably. The former Atletico Madrid star has made some brilliant saves for us this term.

However, on the bench, the Old Trafford side have Tom Heaton as the backup goalkeeper. The former Aston Villa star has not featured much during his time in Manchester.

Man United had Martin Dubravka on loan for half of the season. However, Newcastle United decided to recall the 33-year-old back to Tyneside. The Slovakia international had started two games in the Carabao Cup for the Manchester-based club in the current campaign.

Thus, the Red Devils seemingly need an additional shot-stopper in the squad. However, it remains to be seen who we will go after, with Sommer set on a move to Bayern.
