Erik ten Hag hails “fabulous” Manchester United star Luke Shaw for performances at centre-back

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has hailed “fabulous” Luke Shaw for his performances at centre-back for the club in the last two fixtures.

The 27-year-old played alongside Raphael Varane against Nottingham Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers. We ended up winning both fixtures and kept clean sheets in them, with the England international forming a solid partnership with the former Real Madrid star in the backline.

Speaking to the media via Mirror, Ten Hag has been delighted with Shaw’s displays as a centre-back. The Dutch manager is glad he can count on another player to play in that position when needed.

“We have seen the last two games he has been fabulous. He has impressed but, of course, we also know he’s really good as a left full-back.

“It’s an extra option and that’s always good for a team. Of course, you have your ideas and a plan, but sometimes it changes by circumstances like the illnesses for Harry and Victor.”

The English national signed for the Red Devils in the summer of 2014 from Southampton. He has had a mixed career at the Old Trafford side. Injuries have hampered the left-back’s progress over the years.

Shaw has not been consistent enough at United. At the start of the 2022/23 campaign, the 27-year-old lost his place in the starting lineup to Tyrell Malacia.

The Holland international was signed from Feyenoord in the previous transfer window. He has added competition and depth to the left-hand side of our defence.

However, the former Southampton star has managed to retain his place in Ten Hag’s plans. He has started in the Old Trafford side’s last nine Premier League fixtures.

Shaw also had a promising 2022 World Cup with England. He was a key player for Gareth Southgate in Qatar. However, the Three Lions were beaten by France in the quarter-finals.

Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof have been available, but Ten Hag has preferred to play the 27-year-old instead. It remains to be seen what the future holds for our two centre-backs, with Lisandro Martinez starting most of the games alongside Varane in the current campaign.
