Manchester United ready to ‘up their pursuit’ of Borussia Monchengladbach shot-stopper Yann Sommer
Manchester United are ready to ‘up their pursuit’ of Borussia Monchengladbach and Switzerland star Yann Sommer, according to talkSPORT (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The Red Devils are eyeing the 34-year-old and are looking to bring him to the club. Currently, the Old Trafford side have David de Gea as the number one. However, the Spaniard is only backed up by Tom Heaton.
Martin Dubravka was recently recalled from his loan spell at Man United by Newcastle United. The Slovakia international had joined the Red Devils in the summer of 2022.
Now, Sommer is seen as a replacement for the 33-year-old. The Old Trafford side want to sign the Swiss national after Dubravka was made to move back to the Magpies in the ongoing transfer window.
The Slovak had not made a lot of appearances for United in the current campaign. However, Ten Hag gave him minutes in the Carabao Cup. With our FA Cup campaign also set to start, the 33-year-old would have seemingly been a key player for us.
Sommer has been at Gladbach since 2014. The 34-year-old has been a mainstay in between the sticks for Die Fohlen over the years. However, his contract at the Bundesliga outfit is set to expire in the summer of 2023 (transfermarkt).
The shot-stopper also featured for his national side at the 2022 World Cup. However, Switzerland were beaten convincingly by Portugal in the round of 16 in Qatar.
De Gea has been in fine form for Man United since last season. The 32-year-old had a shaky start to the current campaign, but he has bounced back in fine fashion.

It remains to be seen whether Heaton starts in any of our next fixtures against Everton in the FA Cup and Charlton Athletic in the Carabao Cup. As a short-term solution, it would be wise to get Sommer in January.
