Yann Sommer and Diogo Costa identified as possible replacements for David de Gea at Manchester United

Manchester United have identified Yann Sommer and Diogo Costa as possible replacements for current number one David de Gea, according to 90min (h/t Express).

The Spaniard’s current contract at the Old Trafford side expires at the end of the recent transfer window. However, the Red Devils are keen on extending the 32-year-old’s deal, but on reduced terms.

If the Manchester-based club are unable to tie down the former Atletico Madrid shot-stopper, the Borussia Monchengladbach and FC Porto goalkeepers are being eyed by Erik ten Hag’s team.

Costa seems to be Ten Hag’s ideal goalkeeper. The Portugal international is capable of playing out from the back. His underwhelming performances at the 2022 World Cup have not affected United’s interest in the 23-year-old.

However, Costa recently signed a new contract with the Primeira Liga outfit that includes a massive release clause. Thus, it remains to be seen whether the club will be able to afford him.

As for Sommer, the Gladbach shot-stopper was one of the players associated with the Red Devils in the recent transfer window. But the 34-year-old opted against a move to the Old Trafford side as he did not want to play as a second choice.

Currently, De Gea is being backed up by Martin Dubravka and Tom Heaton. The Slovakia international is at the club on loan until the end of the season.

Dean Henderson is currently away from the club at Nottingham Forest. But the England international is ‘intent’ on leaving the Manchester-based club upon his return.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see how our goalkeeping situation unfolds in the coming months. But if De Gea does part ways with United, it would be wise to opt for a young player like Costa to fill the void.
