Gareth Southgate explains reason for not selecting Manchester United ace Mason Greenwood in England squad for World Cup qualifiers
Speaking in a press conference (h/t The Metro), Gareth Southgate has revealed that the reason behind not selecting Manchester United ace Mason Greenwood for the England squad is because the starlet is on a different pathway.
The 20-year-old started the season in brilliant form as he scored in the first three games but has not been able to produce the same theatrics since then.
Although his worldie against Leicester City was sensational, the competition for game-time in the frontline have resulted in the youngster being on the bench against Tottenham Hotspur & Atalanta. However, when asked upon, Greenwood often delivers–an incredible attribute in such a young attacker.
Despite all of this, Southgate did not select the starlet for the last international break or the upcoming one after this weekend. When asked the reason behind the omission, the English boss revealed that the youngster’s pathway is different.
‘We haven’t discussed it this month. We met with him (Greenwood) this month and totally understand where he is. We said last month with young players their pathway and load is different.
‘He’s at a massive football club with massive expectations. He recognises that is part of making it at international football. We want to get it right with young players. This happens with most players at this age. It’s a very familiar path for us in youth development.’

It is quite a puzzling reason, especially when the winger performs week in and week out for one of the biggest clubs in England. Regardless, the United academy graduate will have to work harder if he wants to be selected for the national team.
Moreover, he was not the only one left behind from the Old Trafford outfit’s contingent. Jadon Sancho and Jesse Lingard also missed out as the pair are currently suffering for game-time under Solskjaer.
