Gareth Southgate happy to see Mason Greenwood back to fitness and form for Manchester United
According to The Mirror, Gareth Southgate is pleased with the form and fitness of Manchester United star Mason Greenwood.
The youngster was on the scoresheet against West Ham United at the weekend. With both Anthony Martial and Edinson Cavani nursing hamstring injuries, he could be set for a more prominent role in the coming games.
Southgate has praised Greenwood’s finishing, terming it as a real strength. He believes the 19-year-old will play a part in next summer’s Euros and the 2022 World Cup qualifiers.
“What you saw with Mason and his finish at the weekend is his biggest strength for me.”
Greenwood’s outing against the Hammers was more in line with his performances last season. The youngster formed an impressive triumvirate with Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial and also earned himself a call-up to the England senior side in September.
“That is what we were seeing towards the end of the season and why we called him into the squad for September.”
Southgate also praised the guidance imparted to Greenwood at Old Trafford. The Three Lions boss believes that the club has handled the youngster well and hopes to see him come through testing situations in the big games.
“He has got great support at his football club. He has got people that care for him there and will bring him into the team and out of the team at the right times.”

Greenwood’s first call-up for England did not go down so well as he and Phil Foden were axed from the squad after they broke Covid-19 protocols by inviting two girls to the team hotel in Reykjavik.
The player for his part has expressed regret over his actions. Greenwood admitted that he was in the wrong and that he would look to repay Southgate’s faith in him. It is fair to say he is now on the right track.
