Mason Greenwood doubtful to feature for England due to agreement between Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Gareth Southgate
According to the Daily Mail, Mason Greenwood will be doubtful to feature for England in the next month despite his electric form for Manchester United.
The teenager has scored 3 goals in 3 Premier League matches for the Red Devils this season. It is believed that Gareth Southgate met United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and both are keen to manage his international career very carefully.
Despite the youngster’s clinical form, he has been omitted from the squad and it is doubtful that he will be called up again next month for the fixtures against Andorra and Hungary. Greenwood’s only cap came in an international game against Iceland a year ago. He and fellow teammate Phil Foden were then sent home after a run-in with the FA.
The young forward is highly regarded in the international set up and they are trying to carefully navigate his career. Southgate said
‘We decided it’s best he stays with his club. We’re all aligned with that — Mason, the club, and his family.’
According to the report, even though Mason is eligible to play for Jamaica, the youngster is focused on being a part of the England national team. Both of the coaches feel a need to protect him in these early stages of his career. They shall be monitoring his progress at every step and work closely to further develop him.
Mason Greenwood is held in high regard by some of the top names in world football and Ian Wright went on to say on Premier league Productions (h/t Metro):
‘I was speaking to Sir Alex the other day; we were playing golf and he mentioned about Mason Greenwood being one of the best they’ve ever had out of their academy.’
