Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lavishes praise on Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood after Leeds goal
Speaking in the aftermath of Manchester United dismantling Leeds 5-1 on opening day (h/t Daily Mail), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised the work Mason Greenwood has put in during the summer.
The young Englishman has made big strides from the club’s academy to become a first-team player. And the 19-year-old has made himself into one of the most highly-rated prospects in the country at the moment.
He showed his worth again when the Red Devils took on Leeds on the opening day. Greenwood latched onto a clever pass from Paul Pogba to get his goal on the day.
And even apart from the goal, the teenager was giving the Leeds defence a run for their money. Solskjaer believes that this is no coincidence, and his good performances are a result of the work that Greenwood has put in during this pre-season.
Greenwood putting in the work
“I think you can see how much work he has put down this pre-season in his summer. He’s turned into a man. His approach, attitude, application, everything he has done every day has been just better and better and I think that’s maturity as well in the kid.”
With the teenager starting as a number 9, fans will be encouraged to think that both Greenwood and new signing Jadon Sancho can fit in the same starting XI.
Greenwood has played down the right-wing before but with United splashing the cash on Sancho, it is very likely that the latter makes that position his own.

However, the Norwegian manager assures fans that the forward’s versatility would allow him to play anywhere on the pitch and hinted at Greenwood being deployed as a striker again in the near future.
“He just loves playing football wherever he is on the pitch… It doesn’t really matter where he’s at. But he’s more than capable now of using his body, as I said. He’s filled out so much more. He could play through the middle dealing with bigger centre-backs.”
