Mason Greenwood thanks the Manchester United support team for getting him into top shape
Speaking to MUTV (h/t Official Man Utd website), Manchester United star Mason Greenwood has expressed his gratitude to the club’s backroom staff for getting him into top shape for the beginning of the 2021/22 season.
The 19-year-old endured a difficult summer that saw him miss out on the England squad for the Euros thanks to an injury. Greenwood spent the time off resting and recuperating and now looks ready and raring to go.
He led the line in our season opener against Leeds United and put up a mature display that drew praise from manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Greenwood grabbed our fourth goal of the night as the Red Devils thumped their arch-rivals 5-1 at Old Trafford.
“I’m feeling good, feeling strong and the coaching staff have helped me to start the season strong and make sure I was ready to go today.”
Both Marcus Rashford and Edinson Cavani were unavailable on the night while Jadon Sancho only made the bench. Greenwood looked unfazed leading the line and caused plenty of trouble for the Leeds defence. A goal on opening night will have done his confidence a world of good. A true team player, he attributed the win to the whole team.
“I thought the whole team performance was amazing, the whole backline David [De Gea] in goal, everyone was amazing.”
With Cavani not getting any younger, the 19-year-old could be set for a more prominent role up front this season. It could very well accelerate his development into a top-level footballer in the years to come.
The three musketeers?
Solskjaer meanwhile has refused to confirm that Greenwood would be used as an out and out striker. The Norwegian is instead keen to utilize the player’s versatility to the maximum.
Capable of playing anywhere along the frontline, Greenwood is but one of United’s vaunted attacking options. Greenwood could dovetail alongside Rashford and Sancho and form a truly fearsome front three that make speed and movement their weapons.
“He scored a goal from left-wing position. He is so effective from the right. Greenwood can still be a no. 9 and centre-forward the way he drops in. He is a natural footballer.”
