Manchester United will be competing with Atletico Madrid for £17m defender

As reported by The Mirror, Manchester United will be a constant annoyance to Atletico Madrid as both teams plan to pursue Bologna FC’s Jhon Lucumi. The 25-year-old defender could end up costing £17m to the club.

The Red Devils have been in the market for a new centre-back for quite some time now. Raphael Varane is running out of contract at the end of the season and could leave since a new deal hasn’t been negotiated yet.

Moreover, Harry Maguire‘s contract is expiring in 2025. Talk suggests that United could move him as well to avoid a free transfer. It seems like Lucumi is the man who has been picked to make up for the holes in Erik ten Hag’s defence.

The Columbian defender has made 22 appearances for the Serie A side this season. He also ended up missing seven games due to injuries, but has been impressive when available.

Lucumi is extremely composed on the ball and has excellent situational awareness. Qualities that every good centre-back should have. However, the road to signing the 25-year-old is not an easy one to travel.

Atletico Madrid also rates the player very highly. The La Liga side will provide fierce competition to Manchester United.

If Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his team wish to sign Jhon Lucumi they’ll have to move quick and swoop in before Atletico gets to have a say.
