Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer asks England to delay Mason Greenwood return

According to Daily Mail, Manchester United manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, has urged the England national team to delay Mason Greenwood’s return to international action in order to manage his workload.

The 19-year-old attacker has been out of the national team for a while now. His only senior international appearance has come in a 12-minute cameo in a UEFA Nations League win against Iceland.

Just when it looked like he could get a start under his belt for the Three Lions, he was sent back home by the national team along with Phil Foden for breaking protocol and inviting guests to a hotel.

Greenwood has begun this season in good form, scoring three in 6 appearances for the Red Devils. And fans wouldn’t be wrong to think that a return to the English side is just a matter of time now.

Mason’s return to be delayed?

But Solskjaer has asked Southgate to pump his brakes and delay the call-up so that Greenwood’s workload can be managed, and that there isn’t too much pressure on the shoulders of the 19-year-old.

There is also the question of Greenwood representing Jamaica. While the player and his family have assured the FA that the player wants to play for the Three Lions, he can still switch to the Caribbean nation until he makes three senior appearances for England.

It does make sense for Ole to want to keep Greenwood fit, relaxed, and firing at Old Trafford right now. At 19, he has progressed at a very fast rate and is already seen as a senior player by Southgate despite him being eligible to play for England U21s.

His whole career is still ahead of him and there is no doubt that the mercurial teenager will get a bunch of senior caps. For now, United fans would love for the teenager to miss international breaks this season and fire the club to their first trophy since 2017.
