Noel Whelan: Former Manchester United boss David Moyes could be the difference-maker in Jesse Lingard transfer race

Speaking to Football Insider, Noel Whelan has claimed that David Moyes could be the difference-maker in West Ham United’s efforts to land Manchester United star Jesse Lingard.

The 28-year-old thrived under the former United boss during his loan spell with the Hammers. Lingard registered an impressive tally of nine goals and five assists in just 16 appearances. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Moyes has been mighty impressed by the Englishman’s showing and is keen to keep him on permanently. However, he will face competition from the likes of Aston Villa among others.

Whelan, however, believes the faith Moyes showed in Lingard could help sway the tide in his favour. He believes the Scot made the 28-year-old once again fall in love with football.

“One thing that David Moyes has allowed him to do is have that freedom out there on the field. To go and showcase his skills and let him enjoy football again which is what he wasn’t getting at Manchester United.”

It was not just Lingard’s performances but also his body language that appeared positive during his time at West Ham. It was a far cry from the struggles he had to face on and off the field at United.

Belief is the key!

Whelan believes it is beneficial for Lingard to play under a manager who knows how to get the best out of him. It is fair to say that Moyes has done just that and has coaxed the absolute best out of the Englishman.

“To play for a manager that allows you to go and have that freedom and be as forward-thinking as a player is, that’s a massive benefit.”

Lingard’s performances also saw him earn a call up to the English national team. He was also named in Gareth Southgate’s provisional squad for the Euros.

While it remains to be seen if Lingard will be keen to stay on at West Ham, there is little doubt that he has thrived in London. The Hammers will play European football next season and could push on to bigger and better things.

With his contract at United expiring next year, Lingard will have a decision to make this summer. Whether he will return to familiar pastures with West Ham remains to be seen.
