Erik ten Hag aiming for top-two at Manchester United next season

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is aiming to finish in the top two in the Premier League in the upcoming campaign after an impressive 2022/23 season.

The Dutch manager was appointed the Red Devils’ manager last summer and has managed to turn things around admirably. We have finished third in the English top flight behind champions Manchester City and Arsenal in the gaffer’s first year in charge of the Old Trafford side.

Speaking at the club’s end-of-season awards ceremony (h/t Manchester Evening News), Ten Hag is determined to do even better in the upcoming campaign and has given a rallying call to United.

“The competition is tough and our competitors also reach higher levels, so we have to do at least the same. But I don’t think it is good enough. We don’t want to stay here; we want to go higher up, we want to increase our levels and compete for the top two.”

Last season, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer struggled to get a lot of positive results at the Old Trafford side. Subsequently, the Norwegian was replaced by Ralf Rangnick on an interim basis.

Unfortunately, the Austrian was unable to do much either during his short time in the Red Devils’ dugout. We ended up outside the top four and did not win any trophies.

However, Ten Hag has brought fresh ideas to the Manchester-based club and they have seemingly been received well by the players.

The former Ajax head coach managed to end United’s six-year trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup. We are also set to face Manchester City on 3 June in the FA Cup final at Wembley Stadium.

Pep Guardiola has turned the Sky Blues into one of the best teams in the world. They have won the last three PL titles in a row. Therefore, the gaffer is somewhat realistic in wanting to compete with the Cityzens rather than beat them right away.

The Old Trafford side are still a long way from building a strong team with enough depth to compete on all fronts. Hopefully, Ten Hag will be backed by the hierarchy next summer and the Dutch manager will be able to build on his achievements at the club.
