David de Gea admits criticism is part of being a Manchester United player

Manchester United shot-stopper David de Gea feels criticism is a part of the game and is only focused on giving his best whenever he puts on the Red Devils’ shirt.

The Spain international has been the first choice at the Old Trafford side in the current campaign. He has been in fine form since last season. But some had doubts regarding the 32-year-old upon the arrival of Erik ten Hag.

But speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, De Gea realises that it is hard to convince everyone. The goalkeeper just takes disapproval in his stride.

“When we keep a clean sheet it means that the team and I, we did a good job. The criticism is always there and you cannot please everyone. I always try my best to keep the ball out of the net and try to keep clean sheets.”

At the start of the season, the Spaniard was a cause for concern for the Red Devils as he made some glaring errors in the former Ajax head coach’s first two games in charge in Manchester.

Ten Hag seems keen to build up from the back and play possession-based football. A goalkeeper has more responsibility in the system with the ball at their feet.

However, that is one area in which De Gea leaves a lot to be desired. The 32-year-old distribution is not his strongest suit. As a result, it was doubtful whether the former Atletico Madrid star would be able to evolve his game to the Dutch manager’s needs.

While the Spaniard still has a lot to improve in terms of his control under pressure, the veteran is one of the best when it comes to shot-stopping. He has put in some clutch performances for the Old Trafford side in the current campaign.

De Gea has been the number one at United for over a decade. He did suffer a dip in form after the 2018 World Cup and almost lost a starting berth to Dean Henderson. But the 32-year-old has bounced back admirably.
