Erik ten Hag not concerned by goalscoring record of Antony at Manchester United

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag is not concerned about the goalscoring record of Antony for the Red Devils in the Premier League.

The Old Trafford side signed the Brazil international from Ajax Amsterdam in the summer of 2022 for £85.51 million. After an encouraging start to life in Manchester, the 23-year-old has petered off a bit.

In the current campaign, he has made 33 appearances in all competitions for United, scoring seven goals and providing one assist. However, the winger last found the back of the net for the Red Devils in the English top flight in October.

Speaking to the media via Manchester Evening News, Ten Hag has come out in defence of Antony. The Dutch manager is convinced that the Brazilian will come good in the PL.

“When you see his record – you mention he is not scoring Premier League- but he did against Betis a really important goal after half time. He did score against Barcelona, the winner, you can’t say they are not big games. He also scored in cup games.

“If you can do it in such games you can also do it in Premier League games, so I don’t have a concern about that.”

The 23-year-old has scored three goals in the league. They came in the first three matches he played in the English top flight.

Antony had a fairytale start at United. The forward scored on his debut for the Red Devils against Arsenal in the 3-1 victory. Subsequently, the winger found the back of the net in the 6-3 loss to Manchester City and the 2-1 win over Everton.

Unfortunately, since then, the Brazilian has been unable to kick on. He has now gone 14 games without scoring in the PL. The 23-year-old’s performances have also been inconsistent.

However, in recent months, Antony has been encouraging. He got the winner in the second leg of the playoff tie versus Barcelona in the Europa League to help us advance further in the competition.

While the Brazilian’s decision-making has left a lot to be desired, he is still young and has a long way to go. The forward has the faith of Ten Hag and is the first choice on the right-hand side of our attack.

A number of niggling injuries have hampered his continuity in the team as well this season. Hopefully, people will neglect the 23-year-old price tag and give him time at the Old Trafford side to thrive.
