Manchester United are ‘considering’ David Raya, who plays for Premier League rivals Brentford, as a replacement for David de Gea, according to Give Me Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The 32-year-old’s current contract with the Red Devils is set to expire at the end of the season. In case the former Atletico Madrid star departs, the West London club’s goalkeeper is being eyed by the Old Trafford side.
Raya has been with the Bees since 2019 when he made his way from Blackburn Rovers. Since then, the Spain international has gone from strength to strength under Thomas Frank.
In the previous campaign, the 27-year-old shone in the English top flight and helped Brentford survive the drop. The Bees are in a much more comfortable position this season and are fighting for a place in a European competition.
At the moment, De Gea is the number one at United. Since last term, the Spaniard has put in some exceptional displays, making some clutch saves to keep the Red Devils in the game at times.
However, the 32-year-old leaves a lot to be desired with his distribution. While Erik ten Hag has seemingly managed to improve the shot-stopper a bit, he still looks uncomfortable with the ball at his feet.
Apart from the former Atletico star, the Dutch manager has Tom Heaton and Jack Butland at his disposal. With all due respect, the two English nationals are not up to par to play for the Old Trafford side week in, week out.
Therefore, if De Gea leaves, we will evidently have to get a new number one. Raya is enjoying his stint at Brentford. However, United’s allure and stature are mighty.
The 27-year-old is a quality goalkeeper. But interest from a team like the Old Trafford side does not come around too often. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether the Spain international will make his way to the Red Devils in the coming months.
