Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reveals injury worry for Manchester United star Raphael Varane after Atalanta game
Speaking to BT Sport after the game (h/t Manchester Evening News), Ole Gunnar Solskjaer revealed that Manchester United ace Raphael Varane had to be brought off against Atalanta due to a hamstring injury.
The Frenchman has had a stuttering start to his United career. The 28-year-old played his first game in August, and although he looked like he was settling into the team, he picked up a groin injury during last month’s international break.
Although he returned to form part of the back three in the victory against Tottenham Hotspur on the weekend, he had to go off after just 38 minutes into the game against Atalanta on Tuesday night.
Solskjaer has now revealed that the French international felt his hamstring, and the safer option was to bring him off the pitch rather than aggravating the issue. The Norwegian told BT Sport (h/t Manchester Evening News):
“He (Varane) felt his hamstring – you can’t take any risks. He’s been such a calming influence, and then we’ve lost him, but that’s football.”
The centre-back left the pitch at an important time for the Red Devils, as they were down by a goal and were struggling at the back as well. Varane’s absence was also felt in the second half after Duvan Zapata shrugged off Eric Bailly and escaped the challenge from Maguire to score Atalanta’s 2nd goal on the day.

Although the Old Trafford outfit found a last-minute equalizer, they faced a lot of defensive trouble throughout the game.
Moreover, Solskjaer’s main cause of concern would be whether the Frenchman will be available for United’s game against arch-rivals Man City on the weekend as they look to get back into the Top 4.
