Manchester United coaches are working with Scott McTominay over playing a more defensive role
According to The Athletic (h/t The Metro), Manchester United coaches Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna are working with Scott McTominay over playing a more defensive role at the club.
The Red Devils are currently sitting two points away from league leaders Chelsea but have conceded twice as many goals (6) as them already. Although conceding goals was an issue last season as well, the club would have hoped that Raphael Varane’s arrival would have fixed that problem.
But, that issue has persisted despite the Frenchman’s arrival and David de Gea’s heroics in goal from time to time. Scott McTominay and Fred have often featured as two central midfielders so far for the club, but it now looks like that is about to change.
Scott McTominay is currently working with Michael Carrick and Kieran McKenna over playing a defensive midfield role, according to The Athletic (h/t Metro).
The Scotsman started playing for the club as an attacking midfielder but was then turned into a box-to-box player. However, Solskjaer is angling for a formation change. The Norwegian is said to be wanting a change from his current 4-2-3-1 formation and wants to revert to a 4-3-3 formation.
However, this too will be an attacking change as he apparently wants Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes to play on either side of the defensive midfielder i.e., McTominay.

Thus, the 24-year-old’s positioning and passing range are being worked upon which are useful qualities for any good deep-lying midfielder. The Old Trafford outfit’s desire to sign Declan Rice and links to Kalvin Phillips in recent times has been understandable, as this is an area they deem important to fill.
Thus, while the details are being worked upon, it will be interesting to see the kind of team Solskjaer puts out against Leicester City post the international break.
