Marcel Brands refuses to rule out a move for Manchester United outcast Donny van de Beek in January

According to NOS (h/t Daily Mail), Everton director of football Marcel Brands has refused to rule out a move for out of favour Manchester United star Donny van de Beek in the January transfer window.

The Dutchman was the club’s marquee signing in the summer of 2020. Despite scoring on his debut, he has largely enjoyed an underwhelming time at Old Trafford. Largely a substitute, he is yet to make a mark at the Theatre of Dreams.

With opportunities difficult to come by, Van de Beek cuts a frustrated figure at United. Everton attempted to sign him on loan earlier in the summer but failed in their effort, as confirmed by Brands.

“We had him on our list.”

Brands admit the Toffees were keen on securing the player’s services in the summer. The player’s agent was open to a loan switch but the deal fell apart at the last minute.

“At the end of the window, I received a call from Guido Albers, his agent, that he might be loaned out after all. But at the last minute it was cancelled. Stopped again.”

Curiously, Brands refused to deny that Everton would return for the Dutchman in January. Rather than answer in the negative, he went on to leave matters to the imagination.

“It is early October, so much can still happen with injuries. United are playing on various fronts, it’s hard to say now.”

Van de Beek’s fortunes have not improved at United this season. The Dutchman has made just one start all campaign, in the club’s 1-0 loss to West Ham United in the Carabao Cup. Staying on at Old Trafford appears to have done him little good.

Brands clearly rates the 24-year-old. Whether the duo will link up at Goodison Park remains to be seen.

“He is a very good player, no doubt about it.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has shown that he remains in the dark as to how best to utilize the Dutchman at Old Trafford. Unless something changes drastically in the months to come, a parting of the ways could be the best for all parties involved.
