Transfer News: Manchester United an option as Cristiano Ronaldo saga rumbles on
In an interesting piece of transfer news by Italian publication Tuttosport (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United appear to have a shot at reuniting with former superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 36-year-old despite his age remains one of the best players in world football. With just over a year to go on his deal at Juventus, his future is a matter of much discussion.
According to the report, a return to Old Trafford has not been ruled out. In fact, it lags only behind a renewed stay at Juventus as the potential outcome.
The report goes on to add that there exists the chance that United could swap Paul Pogba for Ronaldo. Swapping the Frenchman who is in his prime for a player in his late 30s is not the best option, however, Pogba’s contract is running down and the club needs to cash in on him quickly.
Bringing in Ronaldo will also see United increase their wage bill. Pogba, who is the club’s second top earner, nets around €15m per season, half of what Ronaldo makes in Turin.
Of course, as things stand, the Italian publication is only exploring the chances of such a deal happening. It would be apt for us to take it with a pinch of salt for now.
One man who would welcome Ronaldo is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. The United boss recently admitted that the 26-year-old is one of the players he would like to bring back.
However, the move makes little sense for United from a financial perspective. Celebrating a club legend is well and good but we are better off investing for the future.

United were offered a chance to sign Ronaldo last summer but the club chose to pass on it. Hopefully, saner heads will prevail once again.
