Transfer News: Manchester United could sign Nuno Mendes for a cut-price deal
According to Portuguese news outlet Correio da Manha (h/t Sport Witness), Manchester United have been handed a transfer boost in their pursuit of Nuno Mendes.
The Sporting Lisbon youngster has garnered rave reviews of his performances for the Portuguese giants. Just 18, he is one of the best young left-backs in European football.
His star seems to be shining bright as he has just received his senior call-up for Portugal. He is also being tracked by the likes of Manchester City, Real Madrid and Inter Milan.
A major hurdle for United to cross could have been his release clause of €70m. Given the aftershocks of the coronavirus pandemic, it is debatable if the club would have splashed the cash.
However, according to the report, Sporting could be willing to let go of the player for as low as €40m. It is a surprising admission considering their annoyance at selling Bruno Fernandes on the cheap.
The left-back position is a spot where United currently have a number of options. Luke Shaw has rediscovered his best form while Alex Telles is an excellent backup. Brandon Williams too can play there if needed.
An Under-21 international with Portugal, Mendes is an extremely promising talent who is already Sporting’s first-choice left-back. He has so far made 25 appearances for them this season, scoring once and assisting two more. (h/t Transfermarkt)

Whether the Red Devils consider Mendes worthy of the same attention remains to be seen.
