Club news: Manchester United Women set to make Old Trafford bow

As confirmed by the club’s official site, Manchester United Women are set to make news with their first appearance at Old Trafford.

The female Red Devils are set to write their name in history books when they take on West Ham United in the WSL next week. It will be the first time they will grace the pitch at the Theatre of Dreams.

Casey Stoney’s side were originally supposed to take on the Hammers at Leigh Sports Village. The match will now kick off at Old Trafford on Saturday 27 March at 11:30 GMT.

History beckons for Manchester United Women

Stone admits the opportunity will be a great showcase for the women’s game. The opportunity to step onto the famous turf will be a memorable moment for a number of players.

“Playing at Old Trafford will obviously be a special moment in the history of this team and it’s a fantastic opportunity to showcase the women’s game, which has seen huge growth over the last few years.”

Stone does, however, lament over the fact that fans will not be in attendance for the match. She remains hopeful that the future will present more chances to play in front of an adoring Old Trafford crowd.

“We are all eager to get them back in the stands as soon as possible and hope that there will be many more opportunities to play at Old Trafford in the future.”

United women won the Championship in their first season

The match at the Theatre of Dreams got the go-ahead thanks to the international break this month. It created an opening for the game to be accommodated.

The women’s side usually plays their home games at the Leigh Sports Village. They are expected to move to The Cliff once the redevelopment is completed.

Founded just three years ago in 2018, the United women’s side started their journey in the Championship. They won the second tier that season, earning themselves a spot in the WSL.

They finished in the top four last season and look on course to go one better this time around. Hopefully, in time, they get to experience the same success as the men’s side.
