Transfer News: Manchester United shift focus from Jadon Sancho to Pedro Goncalves
According to the Telegraph (Subscription Required), Manchester United have earmarked Sporting Lisbon ace Pedro Goncalves as an alternative to Jadon Sancho.
The Red Devils were heavily linked with a move for the Borussia Dortmund winger last summer. However, it came to nought and the issue of the right-wing went unaddressed.
While United may be able to land the player this summer for a lower price, it does not approach anything that can be called ‘cheap’. Moreover, we appear to have learned our lesson to not put all the eggs in one basket.
In Goncalves, United have a player who is coming into his own as a top-class performer. The 22-year-old has been prolific for Sporting Lisbon and has scored 15 goals while registering 5 assists in just 26 games this season. (h/t Transfermarkt)
His goals have propelled the Portuguese giants to the top of the Primeira Liga. They currently hold a 10-point lead over second-placed Porto in the quest for the first league title since 2002.
United have been tracking Goncalves for some time now. We are far from the only ones, with Liverpool also keen on the player. Jurgen Klopp’s side made an ultimately unsuccessful approach to secure him in January. (h/t Eurosport)
A versatile player
A right-winger, Goncalves is also versatile enough to play in central midfield. His ability to pick out a pass and also move into channels will see him fit well into a United attack that can now afford to be more fluid.
Goncalves has experience of life in England, having spent two years at Wolverhampton Wanderers. During that time, he made just one senior appearance and was largely involved with the club’s Under-23s.

Goncalves could be the latest in a long line of players who have moved from Sporting to United. Cristiano Ronaldo and Nani got the ball rolling before Bruno Fernandes followed in their footsteps. United hope this connection can help smooth matters regarding negotiations.
Just 22, Goncalves is seeing a giant leap in his ability as a footballer. If what we have seen this season is anything to go by, he will fit in well at Old Trafford.
