Manchester United chose against making a move for Cristiano Ronaldo
According to CalcioMercato, La Repubblica journalist Emanuele Gamba has revealed that Manchester United chose against making a move for Cristiano Ronaldo.
The footballing legend is coming off the back of yet another disappointing Champions League campaign with Juventus. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Old Lady is set to embark on a rebuild and Ronaldo’s future in Turin is far from secure.
Gamba revealed that the player’s representatives made overtures to interested parties last summer. Super agent Jorge Mendes made efforts but was unable to find any.
“Mendes had urged Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, who both said no. Frankly, I don’t see the possibility of anything different happening now, at least in Europe.”
Both United and Paris Saint-Germain were urged to a make a move but neither side complied. At 36, Ronaldo is still in excellent health but he has seen his influence start to wane this season.
Gamba goes on to add that he finds it difficult to see Ronaldo make another big-money move in Europe. While a move to America or the Middle East has not been ruled out, it is not in the offing in the near future.
The player, for his part, is still keen to play in Europe and has a year to go on his Juventus contract. It remains to be seen if he will see it out before moving elsewhere.

While a return to Old Trafford would be the stuff of fairytales, it would make little sense for United to pursue such a course of action. Ronaldo in his heyday was one of the best players in the history of the game and still is on his day today.
United, however, cannot delve into the past and are better off looking to the future. Passing on a reunion was the right move.
