According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Southampton are keen on Manchester United youngster Brandon Williams.

The Saints are pursuing a loan deal in January, given the youngster’s current predicament at United.

With Luke Shaw and Alex Telles both at the club, Williams will be hard-pressed to get opportunities to play. With the former now out injured, it remains to be seen if Williams will step up when called upon.

The youngster enjoyed a fruitful breakout season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer last term. Williams made 36 appearances and ended the season as the first-choice left-back following Luke Shaw’s injury.

It was revealed earlier that Williams is less than thrilled at his current position in the team. The report also goes on to add that the 20-year-old was open to leaving on a loan in the summer. Whether he still retains that desire remains to be seen.

Though talented, Williams has shown he still needs time to get to the point of competing at the top.

Southampton are flying high and look an impressive unit against Ralph Hasenhuttl. He has a history of improving young players and Williams could benefit playing under him.

It is possible that he will play a peripheral role at United once Shaw returns to fitness. Having him seek regular time elsewhere will ensure that his development doesn’t stall.

With Diogo Dalot moving to AC Milan on loan, a spot is open at right-back behind Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

A right-footed player, it can be argued that Williams could do better on the right flank. It will be interesting to see if this is an idea Solskjaer will be interested in pursuing.
