Manchester United present an improved second bid for priority goalkeeper target Andre Onana
According to renowned transfer guru Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United have submitted an improved second bid for Andre Onana, following the rejection of their initial offer for the Inter Milan goalkeeper.
It seems that the Red Devils are not backing down from the deal and have presented another strong offer for Onana. Italian journalist Romano earlier revealed that United made an initial bid for the former Cameroon international.
The offer consisted of €40 million (£34.1m) upfront, with an additional €5m (£4.3m) in potential add-ons. However, the player’s current club turned down this offer.
Inter Milan’s sporting director, Piero Ausilio, was disappointed by the bid and made his plans clear regarding their prized asset.
But, United have made a strong comeback and are now ready to pay €50m (€45m plus €5m add-ons) for the African ace. The Premier League giants are fully determined to secure the 27-year-old’s signature.
The outcome of the revised bid will depend on negotiations between both clubs as they seek to reach an agreement on the transfer of Onana to Old Trafford. As per the journalist, an offer worth €55m could be enough to seal the transfer.
It’s no secret that the Red Devils are trying to find a solution to their current goalkeeping issues. United free agent David de Gea’s contract expired on June 30, leaving the possibility of his departure this summer.
Recent indications suggest that the 20-time English champions are actively pursuing Onana as their preferred choice for the new number-one goalkeeper.
The former Ajax star has attracted interest from Saudi Arabia, but the goalkeeper has supposedly communicated his desire to all involved parties that his preference is to move to Old Trafford in the ongoing summer transfer window.
The goalkeeper’s desire to join United strengthens the English club’s position in their pursuit of securing him as their preferred choice for the goalkeeping position.
Onana joined Inter Milan from Ajax last summer, and he had a remarkable season with the Italian club in 2022-23. The Cameroonian goalkeeper showcased his skills in 41 appearances across all competitions, recording an impressive 19 clean sheets.
He played a pivotal role in the Serie A giant’s journey to the final of the Champions League, where he stood out with his exceptional performances. Throughout the competition, he kept eight clean sheets in 13 appearances, displaying his quality and reliability between the posts.
The goalkeeper’s impressive displays have garnered the attention of Erik ten Hag, who is now keen on acquiring his services. Since the first bid, the club has maintained its stronghold in the race and are in continuous talks with the player’s parent club.
The Red Devils have a number of positions to look at, particularly a goalkeeper and a striker. Hence, it is of utmost importance to seal Onana’s transfer as soon as possible rather than holding off on other targets.
