Luke Shaw shoulders blame for Manchester United loss to Brighton & Hove Albion
Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has shouldered the blame for the Red Devils’ loss to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League.
Erik ten Hag’s team visited the Amex Stadium on Thursday (4 May). The England international, who was playing as a centre-back, gave away a penalty in the final minute of stoppage time after handling the ball. Alexis Mac Allister converted the spot-kick.
Speaking to Sky Sports (h/t Manchester Evening News), the 27-year-old owned up to his mistake and was gutted to have lost the match.
“It hurts a lot. It was the last minute, the last action, really, I think. I got a little nudge but, of course, the hand shouldn’t be there, I own up to it and take it on the chin. I cost us the game and it’s tough.”
United created multiple opportunities in the first half. The likes of Antony, Casemiro, Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial had half-chances but were unable to convert them.
In the opening minutes, Antony was clear on goal but was unable to hit the target. On the other end, Kaoru Mitoma was also one-on-one with David de Gea, but the Spaniard pulled off a brilliant stop.
Brighton were close to breaking the deadlock throughout the match on multiple occasions. The second half was dominated by Roberto De Zerbi’s team and the Old Trafford side were on the back foot for most of the proceedings.
Then, in the final minute of the fixture, Brighton received a corner which resulted in Shaw being penalised for a handball in the box after a VAR check. The England international was in a crowd of players, and while it was unfortunate, such things happen in football.
Mac Allister stepped up to hand the Seagulls the three points in the 99th minute. This time around, De Gea could not pull off a save and was beaten.

It was a disappointing loss considering we have Liverpool on our tails in the race for the top four. United still have a healthy gap on them. However, the Red Devils need to finish the season on a high note to guarantee Champions League football.
