Erik ten Hag slams referee after Manchester United lose 1-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion
Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has slammed referee Andre Marriner after the Red Devils lost 1-0 to Brighton & Hove Albion in the Premier League.
Roberto De Zerbi’s team welcomed the Old Trafford side to East Sussex on Thursday (4 May). An Alexis Mac Allister penalty in the 99th minute of the match handed the Seagulls the three points over us.
Speaking to the media via the Evening Standard, Ten Hag was not happy with Brighton being awarded a free-kick in the build-up to their eventual goal. The gaffer was also not pleased with the officials for making other errors in the match.
“The annoying thing is that the free-kick before (the corner) is never a free-kick and I have seen really bad tackles today, sometimes without whistles as well.”
Almost at the end of stoppage time, the Seagulls were awarded a free kick on the edge of the box. Subsequently, the Amex Stadium side won a corner.
Then, as De Zerbi’s team whipped the ball into United’s box, Luke Shaw got a hand on it. And after a VAR check, Marriner pointed to the spot.
Mac Allister stepped up and got the best of De Gea to find the back of the net. The Spaniard made multiple saves throughout the fixture. Unfortunately, he could not keep the Argentina international out.
In the first half, both teams created a number of opportunities to get on the scoresheet. Both goalkeepers were busy and were up to the mark when called upon.
However, the Red Devils dropped off massively after the break. Brighton were the ones who dominated the proceedings and were the ones who looked likely to break the deadlock. They did exactly that with almost the final kick of the match.

Unfortunately, the better side won on the day. The Old Trafford side were not clinical enough in the game and were made to rue it in the end. Hopefully, we will be able to bounce back in our next fixture against West Ham United.
