Manchester United failed to sign Harry Kane last summer
One of the best signings of the summer in European football has been that of Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur to Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich. Even though the Bavarians have lost the league, Kane has had a magnificent season and has the chance to get his hands on his maiden UCL.
In 44 appearances across all competitions this term, he has as many goals and 11 more assists. WOW. To think of the fact that he could have joined Manchester United instead of Munich is absolutely surreal. Erik ten Hag confirmed the same recently. Here is what he had to say via Fabrizio Romano’s Daily Briefing via Substack [subscription required]:
“Yes, you know Kane will get you 30 goals. He’s a striker who already proved it, who we wanted to sign and we couldn’t get him. So we went for Rasmus Højlund. He’s a big talent. Rasmus will get there [30 goals], but he needs time.”
For an initial £86m fee plus add-ons nearing the £100m mark, he switched North London for the banks of Isar. Call it a curse, call it bad luck, but his arrival coincided with Bayern slipping up domestically and saw Leverkusen leapfrog to win the Bundesliga. However, he has a golden opportunity to win the UCL with Bayern soon travelling to the Santiago Bernabeu on the back of a 2-2 draw in the first leg of the semi-finals against Real Madrid.
What if…..
Imagine him rocking up Old Trafford instead of the Allianz Arena. Goals, assists and immediate. That would have been exactly what we needed at this point in time. However, he surely wouldn’t have cost us the same he did for Munich.
Daniel Levy would have surely pumped up the prices to sell Kane to a domestic rival. £100m could have been the base fee in all likelihood. Anyways, we got on board a young striker in Rasmus Hojlund, who has 14 goals and two assists in 38 appearances across all competitions. ETH trusts him to get to the 30-goal mark sooner rather than later.
Rasmus has shown glimpses of what he’s capable of, but he’s not quite hit the heights of Kane just yet. Still, Ten Hag’s got faith in the lad, and who knows, maybe he’ll be banging in goals for fun before you know.

In the end, though, we’ve got to keep our chins up and focus on the future. Who knows, maybe the next Kane is already knocking about in our academy, just waiting for his chance to shine on the big stage. After all, in football, anything can happen – and that’s what keeps us coming back for more.
