Manchester United have ‘made contact’ with the agent of Santiago Gimenez, who plays for Eredivisie giants Feyenoord, according to Mexican outlet WDeportes (h/t Manchester Evening News).

The Red Devils have held discussions with the striker’s representatives regarding a move in the upcoming transfer window. At the moment, the Old Trafford side are looking to get a prolific number nine.

Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane is United’s main target. The Red Devils also have the likes of Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, Goncalo Ramos of Benfica and Eintracht Frankfurt striker Randal Kolo Muani on their list.

However, the Old Trafford side could also opt to pursue a secondary centre-forward next summer. The Manchester-based club are open to parting ways with Anthony Martial in the coming months.

To that end, United have sent scouts to watch Gimenez on a number of occasions. The 21-year-old has a relatively affordable release clause of £17.5 million in his contract.

The Mexico international signed for Feyenoord in the summer of 2022 from Cruz Azul. In the current campaign, he has found the back of the net 18 times in 37 appearances in all competitions.

Erik ten Hag has not been able to rely on Martial at United. The French national has been on the sidelines for most of the season.

As cover in the number nine position, the Red Devils signed Wout Weghorst on loan from Burnley in January. While the Holland international has worked hard, he is not up to the Old Trafford side’s standards.

At the moment, Gimenez is not the finished article. The Mexican still has a long way to go in his career. However, if United are eyeing the 21-year-old as a backup striker in the squad, it would seemingly be a decent addition to the team.
