David de Gea ‘due to sign’ new contract amidst hopes of extending stay at Manchester United

Manchester United star David de Gea is ‘due to sign’ a new contract at Manchester United, but on reduced terms, according to The Telegraph (Subscription Required).

The Red Devils opted against exercising the one-year extension in his existing deal. As of now, the Spaniard is set to be a free agent in the summer of 2023. But the 32-year-old is open to extending his stay and accepting a pay cut as he currently earns £375,000 a week.

Speaking to the Manchester Evening News, De Gea expressed his desire to remain at the Old Trafford side. The shot-stopper is hopeful of featuring for the club beyond the current campaign.

“Yeah, I’m very relaxed. Just focus on training, perform as best as I can. But, for sure, it’s going to end in a good way.”

The 32-year-old signed for United in the summer of 2011 from Atletico Madrid. He was part of the last team that successfully lifted the Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013.

Over the years, the Spaniard has established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in world football. However, there have also been a few downs in the middle.

There was a period in De Gea’s career where he looked unbeatable. However, after the 2018 World Cup in Russia, the 32-year-old seemed to have lost his confidence.

The Spaniard made multiple errors in between the sticks and it seemed like his time with the Red Devils was coming to an end. However, the shot-stopper has been brilliant for us since last season.

Initially, under Erik ten Hag, De Gea struggled a bit after having to play out from the back. The 32-year-old leaves a lot to be desired with the ball at his feet. However, the Spaniard has evidently improved his distribution a bit and has consistently shown his other qualities.

Thus, considering De Gea’s performances, he has earned a new contract at the Old Trafford side. Hopefully, the 32-year-old will be able to continue his fine form in the coming future.
