Atletico Madrid to consider Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea as replacement for Jan Oblak
La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid will ‘consider’ a move for Manchester United star David de Gea if their current number one Jan Oblak leaves the club, according to Spanish outlet Fichajes (h/t Manchester Evening News).
The 32-year-old;s current contract with the Red Devils expires at the end of the season. However, the Old Trafford side are keen on triggering the one-year extension in his deal.
De Gea joined United in the summer of 2011 from Los Rojiblancos. Since then, the Spain international has been the first name on the team sheet at the club over the years.
The 32-year-old was part of the Red Devils’ team that last lifted the Premier League title in 2013 under Sir Alex Ferguson. There was a point in the shot-stoppers career in Manchester when he was considered one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
However, De Gea had a few shaky moments in between the sticks at the 2018 World Cup in Russia and seemed to lose his confidence at United as well after that.
At one point, it seemed Dean Henderson would pip the Spaniard to a starting spot. However, the 32-year-old has bounced back in fine fashion. He has been in fine form for the club since last season.
De Gea had a poor start to life under Erik ten Hag. He made some considerable errors in the first two Premier League fixtures in the current campaign as we lost to Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford. But the 32-year-old has returned back to his best since then.
Atletico have Croatian Ivo Grbic backing up Oblak. The Slovakia international has been Diego Simeone’s first choice at the Madrid-based club for several years now.
